Monday, August 3rd, 2009 – Skagway

Today we got up early and went ashore to meet our rock climbing tour. They drove us about 20 minutes out of town, up into the mountains. It was a nice small group of just 6 of us total, so with our 3 guides, we were well covered. I climbed 3 different runs on the rock face and repelled once from the top of the highest point. It was GREAT!

Scaling the rock wall!

Here I am heading over the ledge!

I look like Spiderman!

We chose to be dropped off in town afterward and went to the Skagway Brewing Company for lunch, on recommendation of our rock climbing guides. I had a fantastic halibut and chips.

We did a bit of window shopping, then caught the shuttle ($5 per person for unlimited use) up to the gold panning place. I now have my own little vile with some gold in it. Unfortunately, we all only got one little pan of dirt to pan; I would’ve liked to do it some more because just when I felt like I might be getting the hang of it, we were done!

Katie panning for gold!

Here some "fun girls" are advertising for a funny old time show. We didn't go, and sadly forgot that we'd wanted to go check out the brothel museum. I mean, who would want to miss that opportunity?!

Another funny dinner anecdote: Mr. No Global Warming proclaimed that all computer viruses are caused by antivirus companies to force you to buy their product. Can people really be so dumb?! I had to try hard not to laugh.

Katie and I went swimming in the salt water pool tonight. It was a great paddle. Then I got out and rinsed off in the shower before going down to the room (so that I wouldn’t drip salt water all over the ship). As I was rinsing, Katie said to me, “Don’t take this the wrong way, but you remind me of the scene in Free Willy when they take him through the car wash.” Don’t take that the wrong way?! Is there a RIGHT way to take it?! Apparently, she explained, she meant that I looked shiny. I am now calling her Shamu. At least for tonight.

Who doesn't love a towel animal?
