Tuesday was not a shining day. No shining moments. In fact, it was lousy. But because it was so loudy, I will not be using Houton Mifflin reading anthologies any longer. I was willing to give it a go, but it was NOT good. So from now on we will be using real books...what a strange concept! My first plan is to just try and make them enjoy books. Reading class (with these damn anthologies) has been so painfully boring to these kids (because they don't read well, so they don't progress through things) for so long that they hate reading (which of course keeps them from becoming better readers. It was a bit of mutiny, so my mean teacherness came out. Bad books = bad attitudes, bad attitudes + no Karen = mean teacherness.
Hopefully things will be better tomorrow. I'm seriously considering ceremoniously throwing the anthologies in the recycling with the kids...of course we can't actually dispose of them, but they will certainly be leaving my classroom. I'm starting a new program with the little kids too, and taking them at a different time. Kindergarteners and first graders with a second grade "helper" (who of course is working at the same level, if not below, the others).
Oh, and Karen wasn't at school today (which I sort of mentioned up above). Bad day for no Karen. And there was no sub. So I just couldn't take the groups that Karen teaches. Maybe another day I could do both, but certainly not today.
The day started off going lousy, but at least I think it will be better tomorrow. I certainly have to believe that, don't I? Otherwise, I might just choose not to wake up...no no, I don't do that.
